چکیده

Many techniques for model selection in the field of neural networks correspond to well established statistical methods. The method of 'stopped training', on the other hand, in which an oversized network is trained until the error on a further validation set of examples deteriorates, then training is stopped, is a true innovation, since model selection doesn't require convergence of the training process. In this paper we show that this performance can be significantly enhanced by extending the 'non convergent model selection method' of stopped training to include dynamic topology modifications (dynamic weight pruning) and modified complexity penalty term methods in which the weighting of the penalty term is adjusted during the training process.

Hierarchical Bayesian Models for Regularization in Sequential Learning

We show that a hierarchical Bayesian modeling approach allows us to perform regularization in sequential learning. We identify three inference levels within this hierarchy: model selection, parameter estimation, and noise estimation. In environments where data arrive sequentially, techniques such as cross validation to achieve regularization or model selection are not possible. The Bayesian app...

On Comparison of Adaptive Regularization Methods

Modeling with exible models, such as neural networks, requires careful control of the model complexity and generalization ability of the resulting model which nds expression in the ubiquitous bias-variance dilemma [4]. Regularization is a tool for optimizing the model structure reducing variance at the expense of introducing extra bias. The overall objective of adaptive regularization is to tun...

Extended MULTIMOORA method based on Shannon entropy weight for materials selection

Selection of appropriate material is a crucial step in engineering design and manufacturing process. Without a systematic technique, many useful engineering materials may be ignored for selection. The category of multiple attribute decision-making (MADM) methods is an effective set of structured techniques. Having uncomplicated assumptions and mathematics, the MULTIMOORA method as an MADM appro...

Information Complexity-Based Regularization Parameter Selection for Solution of Ill-Conditioned Inverse Problems

We propose an information complexity-based regularization parameter selection method for solution of ill-conditioned inverse problems. The regularization parameter is selected to be the minimizer of the Kullback-Leibler (KL) distance between the unknown data-generating distribution and the fitted distribution. The KL distance is approximated by an information complexity (ICOMP) criterion develo...

The Tail Mean-Variance Model and Extended Efficient Frontier

In portfolio theory, it is well-known that the distributions of stock returns often have non-Gaussian characteristics. Therefore, we need non-symmetric distributions for modeling and accurate analysis of actuarial data. For this purpose and optimal portfolio selection, we use the Tail Mean-Variance (TMV) model, which focuses on the rare risks but high losses and usually happens in the tail of r...
